Bunions

Painful bony bumps that develop on the inside of the foot.

Description:

A bunion (also known as Hallux Valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe moves towards the second toe, causing the joint to protrude. This misalignment can lead to pain, swelling, and difficulty finding comfortable footwear. Bunions are more common in women and can be exacerbated by factors like footwear choice, genetics, and abnormal foot mechanics.

Causes of Bunions:

  • Genetics:
    • Inherited foot structure abnormalities, such as flat feet or an imbalance in the muscles and ligaments of the foot, can predispose individuals to bunions.
  • Footwear:
    • Tight, narrow shoes, particularly those with high heels, can push the toes into unnatural positions, contributing to bunion formation.
  • Abnormal Foot Mechanics:
    • Overpronation (excessive rolling of the foot inward) and flat feet place added stress on the big toe joint, increasing the likelihood of bunions.
  • Arthritis:
    • Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis can contribute to joint degeneration and misalignment, which may lead to bunions.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and tenderness at the base of the big toe.
  • Visible bump at the joint of the big toe.
  • Swelling, redness, or inflammation around the toe joint.
  • Limited movement of the big toe, affecting walking or standing.
  • Corns or calluses forming on the bump due to friction with shoes.

Risks if Left Untreated:

  • Chronic Pain: Ongoing discomfort can impair mobility and daily activities.
  • Joint Damage: Without intervention, bunions can cause permanent joint damage, leading to increased pain and stiffness.
  • Difficulty with Footwear: The misalignment may make it challenging to find shoes that fit properly, further contributing to pain and discomfort.
  • Deformities in Other Toes: As the big toe moves, it may cause additional toe deformities, such as hammertoes.

What Appointment to Book:

  • New Patients: Initial Consultation or Foot Assessment.
  • Returning Patients: Advanced Bunion Care or Footwear Advice.

Effective Treatments We Offer:

  • Conservative Treatments:
  • Padding and Splinting: To cushion the bunion and relieve pressure.
  • Orthotics: Custom foot orthotics to correct foot mechanics and reduce stress on the big toe joint.
  • Footwear Advice: Recommendations for shoes that reduce pressure and accommodate foot deformities.
  • Physiotherapy: Exercises to strengthen the foot and improve alignment, reducing symptoms.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications: To reduce swelling and pain.

Possible Surgical Treatments:

  • Bunionectomy: Involves the removal of the bony bump and realigning the toe. This is often considered when conservative measures fail or the bunion is severely affecting quality of life.
  • Osteotomy: Involves cutting and realigning the bones of the foot for a more stable structure.
