Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis)

Description

Onychomycosis is the technical term for Fungal Nail infections. Nail infections can lead to colour changes of the nail to yellow/brown/beige and also thickening of the nail. The nail can also become brittle and crumbly.
If left untreated, the fungus can spread to more nails and cause infection to the skin.

Causes
  • Warm and moist environments
    • Feet sweat! Extended periods of time wearing socks and shoes.
  • Communal showers and swimming pools
    • Easily picked up in large quantities from other individuals.
  • Poor foot hygiene
    • Not washing and then subsequently drying the feet properly.
    • Drying in between toes if you have toes close together is very important.
  • Nail Trauma
    • More Vulnerable to fungal infection
  • Weakened immunity
    • Diabetes, poor circulation or immunosuppressant medications. 
Symptoms
  • Discolouration of the nail
  • Nail cracking
  • Brittle nail
  • Crumbling
  • Thickening
  • Dry skin +/- redness around the nails, in between the nails.
Risks if left untreated
  • Full nail discolouration
  • Full nail thickening
  • Pain from thickened nails
  • Nails falling off
  • Athletes foot (Tinea Pedis)
Treatment
  • Topical antifungal medication
    • Powder/Sprays + Wash + cream and Nail lacquers.
  • Oral Medication
    • Very effective but requires regular blood test to monitor the liver
  • Nail (deep) cleaning and debridement
    • Regular debridement of unhealthy (infected nail), normally in
      addition of one of or both of the above-mentioned treatments.
    • Actively removes the fungus.
  • Nail Surgery
    • Removes the effected nail and nail plate.
