Fungal infection affecting the skin of the nail.

Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis)

Description:

Fungal nails, or onychomycosis, are infections of the nail plate caused by fungi, including dermatophytes, yeast, or moulds. This condition often results in discolouration, thickening, brittleness, and deformity of the nail, making it unsightly and, in some cases, uncomfortable. Fungal nail infections can spread to other nails, surrounding skin, or even other people.

While fungal nails can be persistent, effective treatments are available to restore nail health and prevent further complications.

Causes:

Fungal Infections: Typically caused by dermatophytes, but also by yeasts like Candida or non-dermatophyte moulds.

Moist Environments: Prolonged exposure to damp conditions, such as in swimming pools, gyms, or wearing sweaty footwear.

Trauma: Injury to the nail makes it more susceptible to fungal invasion.

Underlying Conditions: Diabetes, compromised immunity, or poor circulation can increase susceptibility.

Spread: From athlete’s foot or another infected person.

Symptoms:

Yellow, white, or brown discolouration of the nail.

Thickened, brittle, or crumbly nail texture.

Distorted nail shape or separation from the nail bed.

Mild odour from the infected nail.

Risks if left untreated:

Spread of Infection: Fungal infections can spread to other nails, surrounding skin, or between individuals.

Pain and Discomfort: Thickened nails can press against footwear, causing pain during walking or activities.

Severe Deformity: Over time, nails may become significantly damaged or deformed.

Complications in At-Risk Groups: Individuals with diabetes or poor circulation may develop secondary bacterial infections or ulcers.
